Ras Banamungu sings of Rwanda at Commonwealth Festival

There were great scenes in Brisbane, Australia, yesterday, as the 2020 Commonwealth Festival once again got under way within the great walls of imposing St John's Cathedral. Rwanda's own Ras Banamungu and the Det-n-ators International were there to represent the country and Ras had penned a special song in Rwanda's native tongue to specially mark the occasion. His act coming on in the later half of the morning's proceedings. Entitled 'Inka', Banamungu sung of the cows and culture of his native land as the broadly smiling Det-n-ators International danced flowingly in the traditional Rwandan fashion. The packed audience loudly showed their appreciation as Ras and the Det-n-ators hit the final notes, ending a great performance from this very talented group. Since he left Rwanda f...

Rwanda being the compatively tiny country it is, it is not every day her fine culture and traditions are to be found on display outside the country herself. Having said that, Rwandan ex-pats inc. Ras Banamungu and dance group Indatwa did their homeland proud last weekend at Wanneroo's regular International Festival. Indatwa, introduced by rising star 'Shakalakka du' Ras Banamungu, put on an enchanting display of traditional dance and cultural costume. Their graceful arrangements captivating the large crowd and drawing loud applause in the warm evening scenario. An inherent smiling approach and elegant moves promoted a somewhat intense feeling of goodwill that was keenly felt as it flowed easily through the audience like incense in the temple. Entertainment to touch the spirit. ...

Laughter Percussion: A new development in the treatment of mental illness and depression.

Musical therapist Ras Banamungu, a survivor of the Rwanda genocide, has devoted his life to both music and also the ongoing treatment of those in need of mental comfort and reassurance. Starting out by working in orphanages and hospitals in and around Kigali, the Rwanda capital, he eventually teamed up in 2013 with an international team on a mercy mission to bring spiritual relief to heavily traumatized survivors. Along with clay therapy, the main treatment taught, Banamungu also learned of laughter yoga and how well this unusual therapy lifted people out of the doldrums. He eventually formed a strong bond of friendship with musician and teacher of God, Steve Dean, who was also on the international team and returned with him to Australia, where he now works as a support worker an...

Finding my attention being drawn to the great anticipation that is filling Western Australia right now - concerning the forthcoming release of Ras Banamungu and the Det-n-ators International new album 'I am Messenjah' - I lost no time in procuring an interview with the lively Rastaman Ras Banamungu and his friend, bandmate and songwriting partner Steve Dean. As a musical project, the duo began as Abadahigwa International Movement (AIM), but later changed to Ras Banamungu and the Det-n-ators with new band members joining on their return to Australia after their original meeting in Rwanda, while both involved with a humanitarian project. As a teacher of God, Steve was impressed by how closely Ras Banamungu's Rastafarian ideals related to his own A Course in Miracles-inspired knowledge...
